Keeping secrets
Elara kept the secret since she knew Julian would not approve of the adoption. ‘You were so certain of your views,’ she murmured, her voice breaking. ‘I was worried you would leave us.’ Julian experienced a feeling of guilt. He had been so hard and unbending. ‘I thought I done the right thing,’ he said. Elara’s gaze softened. ‘I did what I thought was best for everyone,’ she explained. The room was filled with mutual regret.

Unfounded concerns
Elara’s actions were motivated by love and generosity, hence Julian’s anxiety was unwarranted. ‘You didn’t have to do it alone,’ Julian eventually remarked, his voice heavy with regret. ‘I would have helped.’ Elara shook her head slowly. ‘You weren’t in the correct frame of mind to accept what I did,’ she explained. Julian had to agree. He recognized how much fear and pride had clouded his judgment in the past. Their candor was healing.
