Alecia Patranella rejoiced in November when she lost weight for the first time in 17 years in comparison to her spouse. What they would like others to know about their weight-loss experience, the reasons surgery is not “an easy way out,” and how their perspective on eating has radically altered are as follows:

She gained roughly 50 pounds after the Patranellas’ 2005 marriage because she was misdiagnosed for nearly a year with PCOS and an underactive thyroid. Before becoming pregnant with the couple’s now-11-year-old son, she also struggled with depression and infertility. Jason Patranella claims that because of her tough pregnancy and gestational diabetes, he turned into a “symbolic eater,” indulging in things that were off-limits to her and that he typically didn’t like, such cakes and pies. “I probably ate a whole pecan pie every week while she was pregnant,” he recalls.
