Alecia Patranella claims that she was an emotional eater who would overindulge in cookies or chips when she felt bad about herself. By the time her 5-foot-7-inch frame struggled to fit into the restroom stall at that baseball game, she weighed 294 pounds.

In September 2022, Alecia Patranella had weight-loss surgery. Jason Patranella postponed his operation for two months in order to ensure that one of them could always hold his three-year-old daughter, as patients are limited in their ability to lift weight after the treatment. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, during a sleeve gastrectomy, doctors remove around 80% of the stomach, which reduces the quantity of food that a person may eat, decreasing appetite and boosting satiety.
