He picked a tree that didn’t have a substantial trunk but was long enough to reach the opposite bank of the river. He then started hacking into it. The birds fled in shock at the first strike against the tree. Despite the fact that this went against his convictions, Cole knew he had to persevere. That wasn’t as crucial as saving the animal.
