Feeling ill
I tried to push through her endless chores, but soon, I began to feel sick. Waves of nausea overwhelmed me, forcing me to throw up every few minutes. Exhausted, I decided to lie down, thinking, A little nap wouldn’t hurt. That “little nap” turned into sleeping almost the entire day. I woke abruptly to the sound of my mother-in-law stomping up the stairs and barging into my room.

“You’re asleep?!” she yelled, ripping the covers off my bed. “You lazy bitch! Is this how you repay me after I took you in?!” I tried to explain that I wasn’t feeling well, but she wouldn’t listen. Her fury only escalated, and the anxiety of her shouting became too much for me to handle. I ended up throwing up again—right onto her shoes.
